Legal action threat to cockerels on Norfolk allotments

A resident of the Burnham Market parish Council in Norfolk has sent a letter threatening legal action to stop cockerels being kept on an allotment. He has complained about the noise.

The Allotments Act 1950 states hens and rabbits are allowed – but cockerels are not mentioned, Burnham Market Parish Council says, the cockerels may be classed as illegal and is taking legal advice. A petition has been organised within the viaage and the surrounding area to keep the birds just where they are.
Petition organiser Robin Thomas said: “If people move to the country they must expect rural sounds. “Quite frankly, if they don’t, why come here?”

People on the allotments think the situation is “bloomin’ stupid” according to Charlie Neale, who owns a cockerel on the site.

A parish council spokesperson said that allotment holders had tried to quieten their cockerels down by shutting them away during the night and reducing their numbers. The council has received two written complaints and a handful of verbal ones. The complainant who wrote threatening legal action was unavailable for comment.
More than 120 signatures have been gathered for the petition so far and many shops in the village have put up signs supporting the “Save Our Cockerels” campaign.

May be this is the beginning of a fight back to stop those town folk moving to the country – and then trying to change what is so good about rural areas. Yes – the World has gone mad!
