Parrot Society seminar at Twycross Zoo

Prepared by Les Rance (Parrot Society Secretary)

Parrot Society members were superbly entertained by a galaxy of leading avicultural experts and pet behaviourists brought together by Council members Tony Pittman and Alan Jones who organised this excellent event. This really was a day to remember, there was a tremendous amount of interesting information supplied by the speakers, in order of presentation they were:-
Neil Dorman, Curator of Birds at Twycross Zoo who gave a talk “Introduction to Twycross Zoo with perspectives and plans for the future”
Alan Jones “Being a Birdvet, approaches and diagnostic procedures”
Barrett Watson “Parrot Breeding; a personal perspective”
Dorothy Schwarz “Enriching your parrots’ lives enriches your own”
Tony Pittman “Projects supported by the Parrot Society UK worldwide”
Jan Hooimeijer from the Netherlands “Veterinary involvement in parrot behaviour and welfare in the Netherlands”
Hildegard Niemann from Germany “Screaming, Biting, Feather Plucking – Dealing with Behavioural Problems of Pet Parrots”
And last but certainly not least Malcolm Green of The Birdcare Company “Hypocalcaemia and obesity – common problems in pet parrot keeping”

A really wonderful day was enjoyed by the many delegates who travelled from all over the UK to attend what Parrot Society Chairman Colin O’Hara described as “an excellent day which we must repeat”. The Council of the Parrot Society wish to express their thanks to the staff and management of Twycross Zoo who contributed greatly to the success of the day.
